South Georgia State College announces 2018 commencement speakers

Graduates from summer 2017, fall 2017 and spring 2018 will be honored during annual commencement ceremonies at South Georgia State College (SGSC) on Friday, May 4, 2018. The Douglas Campus ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. on the lawn in front of Peterson Hall. The Waycross Campus ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium.

The keynote speaker for the Douglas Campus ceremony is Dr. G. Wayne Clough, Secretary Emeritus of the Smithsonian Institution and President Emeritus of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Clough, who was born in Coffee County, served as the tenth president of the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1994 to 2008 and as the twelfth Secretary of the Smithsonian from 2008 to 2014.

Mr. Ed Flowers will provide the keynote address for the Waycross Campus ceremony. Flowers lives in Waycross and worked for the Ware County School System for 25 years before retiring in 2013. He has taught history at SGSC for a total of 22 years, serving as an adjunct and full-time lecturer. Flowers also serves as the voice of the Hawks men’s basketball team and the Ware County Gators football team. He will retire from SGSC at the end of this academic term.

The community is invited to attend and help celebrate these special occasions with the class of 2018. Please be advised that West College Park Drive on the Douglas Campus will be closed on May 4 from 7 a.m. until noon.
