Mr. Joel Shafter Duren, age 72, of Douglas passed away Monday afternoon, May 28. 2018, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. He was born March 8, 1946 to the late Shafter Duren and the late Marilzia McClendon Duren. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by: his wife, Gerrell Faye Law Duren; and a daughter, Sabrina Dawn Duren.

Mr. Duren, a native of Douglas and Coffee County, retired after 34 years of Service as Major with the Douglas City Police Department. He served with the U. S. Marines during the Viet Nam Era.

Mr. Duren was a member of Unity Church.

Survivors include: daughters: Shelda Kirkland and her husband Kenneth “Sam” of Hazlehurst, GA., Regina Cook and her husband David of Ocilla, GA.; sister, Carolyn Bowman of Douglas, GA.; grandchildren: Ashley Cook and her husband Trent of Hazlehurst, GA., Blaine Cook, Ben Cook and Shelby Cook all of Ocilla, GA.; great granddaughter, Sadie Cook of Hazlehurst, GA; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

The funeral service was held on Thursday, May 31, 2018, at 1 P. M., at Unity Church where Rev. Joseph Cochran and Rev. Glen Fussell officiated. The Interment followed in Lax Holiness Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ricketson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
