A sex offender wanted by the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office ended up in a stand-off with deputies Saturday morning. The stand-off concluded when the suspect, William Franklin Goodwin, turned the gun on himself.
The sheriff’s office had been looking for Goodwin for failing to maintain the requirements of his sex offender status after moving from his registered address. He moved from the address with notifying the sheriff’s office. Goodwin had bene convicted of multiple criminal sexual acts against a minor. He was also on probation and hadn’t maintained the requirements of his probation. The sheriff’s office had an arrest warrant for failure to register a change of address for a sex offender.
Saturday morning, deputies located Goodwin. The stand-off took place at a business in the Oak Park community in Douglas. Goodwin was holed up in the business and fired at least three shots at deputies. No deputies were injured in the incident. Eventually, Goodwin turned the gun on himself. He was transported from the scene in critical condition. At the time of this writing, he was unconscious and not expected to recover from the gunshot wound. The sheriff’s office contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation; GBI officers responded to the scene to continue the investigation.
