In April 2018, a Public Protection Classification (PPC) survey of the Douglas Fire Department was conducted. The PPC survey analyzed the structural fire suppression delivery system within the city of Douglas. As a result of this survey, the City of Douglas moved from a class three to a class two. In the United States, there are only 1,324 class two fire departments. This class two grade plays an important role in the underwriting process at insurance companies. A class two rating ensures fire insurance coverage will remain the same and save Douglas homeowners and businesses in insurance costs. The lower PPC will go into effect on Oct. 1, 2018.

“We are very happy to receive this improved rating from the Public Protection Classification survey,” says Fire Chief Larry Wilson. “It is through the combined efforts of the Douglas Fire Department, Mayor Paulk and City Commissioners, Utilities Director Mike Hudson, 9-1-1 Director Vernica Crockett, and County Fire Chief Steve Carver, that has helped our city to achieve this rating”.

The PPC program provides important, up-to-date information about municipal fire protection services in each community surveyed. A city’s ISO rating grade ranges from one (best rating) to 10 (lowest rating). Most U.S. insurers of home and business properties use ISO’s PPC in calculating premiums. In general, the price of insurance in a community with a good PPC is lower than in a community with a poor PPC, assuming all other factors are equal. A community’s PPC depends on emergency communications systems, the fire department, the hydrant & water supply system, and community efforts to reduce the risk of fire.

For more information, please contact Fire Chief Larry Wilson at the City of Douglas Fire Department, 912-384-4815.
