On Wednesday, August 15, 2018, Douglas Coffee Parks and Recreation Department (DCCPRD) was chosen as the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association agency of the year at the District 2 Banquet that was held at Central Square Complex in Douglas. The District 2 agency of the year award recognizes an exemplary agency that has made an impact on their community in the last year.

“What an honor for the Parks & Recreation Department to receive the Agency of the Year Award from GRPA,” says Mayor Tony Paulk. “It is an outstanding achievement to be recognized by the agencies in District 2 for the department’s efforts to promote leisure opportunities in our community that enhances our quality of life.”

Landy Gomez, DCCPRD Athletic Coordinator, received the James Edo “Sonny” Miller Award. Landy has worked with the Recreation Department for 18 years. To receive this award, the person has shown excellence in Athletic Programming. The award is named after Sonny Miller, who was in the recreation field for over 40 years in Brunswick and Glynn County. Mr. Miller was one of the founding members of the GRPA Athletic committee and served as chairman for four terms. Landy was also sworn in as the GRPA District 2 Treasurer.

The staff of the DCCPRD Maintenance (Parks, Facilities, and Grounds) division received the Mickey Katkaveck Award, which honors excellence in Park Maintenance. The award is named after Mickey Katkaveck, the first Waycross Recreation Department Director. The annual football bowl held in Waycross is named after Mr. Katkaveck, and will be embarking on its 65th year.
