The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council (DMYC) held its monthly meeting recently for the 2018 – 2019 school year. Items on the agenda included discussion about the social media pages for the Youth Council, recognition of youth in the community, and recognition of the Citizens Christian Academy’s athletics department.

The council also heard presentations from Jessica Williams (Anti-Bullying Campaign and March) and Blondale Thomas (Childhood Cancer Awareness Group of Coffee County) about their programs, followed by the Junior Public Information report.

For the month of September, Miss Samantha Martin was chosen as the outstanding youth council member to spotlight. Samantha is the daughter of James Martin and Jennifer Teston and is one of four siblings. Currently, she is a junior at Coffee High School and is dual enrolled at South Georgia State College. She is the co-editor of the Chariot online and is a member of the Coffee Care club. Samantha has applied for acceptance into The National Honor Society. She is on track to be an honor graduate and will also graduate with an associate’s degree from SGSC. After high school, she hopes to become a pediatrician and later seek a career in politics as an advocate for child healthcare.

The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council meets each third Thursday of each month at 6 pm at City Hall in the council chambers. The MYC wants to hear from citizens about youth in the community that are doing exceptional things with their lives. To submit a youth or youth group to be recognized, please contact Dinitra Williams, Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council Coordinator, at dwilliams@cityofdouglas.com or call the City Clerk’s office at (912) 389-3405.
