The South Georgia State College Hawks opened their tenth season Thursday night with a 93-64 win over American Basketball Institute (ABI). It was also the team’s tenth consecutive season opening win.

Skylar Baggs led the Hawks (1-0) with 22 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Keyshaun Street finished with 20 points, three assists, and three steals.

Head coach Cory Baldwin was pleased with the team’s performance and the fact that everyone was able to see playing time.

You like to try and play everybody in the first game, so we were fortunate to be able to do that tonight,” Baldwin said. “You have to give ABI credit, though. They played well in the second half, which will only help us to get better.”

The Hawks will travel to Florida State College-Jacksonville and USC-Salkehatchie before returning to Waycross for the home opener Saturday, Nov. 10. Baldwin said the two road games will be tough, which was planned when the regular season schedule was created.

“Believe it or not, we are a combined 0-11 at those two places. Hopefully, we’ll be able to end that streak,” said Baldwin.

The Nov. 10 home opener in Waycross is scheduled for 4 p.m. General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
