Carl Emmit Bishop, age 96, of Douglas, passed away on Wednesday October 31, 2018 at Lakeside Assisted Living Home. Mr. Bishop was born on April 1, 1922 in Emanuel County, Georgia, the son of the late Lott Bishop and Eunice Bishop.

Born April 1, 1922 and died October 31, 2018. Carl Bishop lived a full life. He was raised in Summertown, around Twin City. He attended a one room school house and grew up on a farm where his father raised cattle. He attended ABAC, where he met his wife, Margie Fletcher, who was also in school at ABAC. In December of 1942 he enlisted in the service and by April of 1943, he headed to active duty, becoming part of the infantry that invaded Anzio, marching into Rome. Carl returned home with two Purple Hearts and a Good Conduct Medal. He then attended the University of Georgia and received his bachelor’s in public health. He used his skills to train returning veterans in farming. Carl returned to South Georgia and they lived in Twin City, close to his family where he worked with the 4-H. Eventually he found his niche, and using his degree in public health. The family moved to Fitzgerald then finally to Douglas in 1961. Here he was the public health inspector for nearly two decades. He retired in 1976. Mr. Bishop did everything from checking septic tanks in new buildings in Coffee County to investigating rabies cases and inspecting school cafeterias.

He was a lifelong Kiwanian. He was the treasurer for the club for 30 years. Carl was a member of Douglas First United Methodist Church, proud UGA fan and Democrat. He enjoyed fishing but most of all he enjoyed his daily walks. He was famous for saying, “I walk today, so I can walk tomorrow.” He walked three miles a day until he was 90.

Carl Bishop was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Fletcher Bishop, and sister Norma Durden. His memories live on with his daughter, Mary Veal, his granddaughters, Holly Veal, Rosie Veal and Laura Veal, and his great grandchildren, Evan Jensen, Henry Frier and Molly Frier.

The funeral service was held at 4 pm on Saturday November 3. 2018 at Douglas First Methodist Church with Rev. Doug Walker officiating. Interment will follow at Douglas City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, people are invited to give in his honor to DUMC Preschool or Habitat for Humanity.
