Applications are currently being accepted for the City of Douglas Mayor’s leadership program for youth, the Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council (DMYC). Applications for 2019- 2020 are open to high school students, in grades 9-12, from Coffee County High School or private and home schools located in the city limits, to serve on the Douglas Youth Council.

“Our first year of the Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council has proven to be a learning experience for our youth. They have learned how important leadership programs are to our city,” says Mayor Tony Paulk. “I can’t wait to continue to initiate and foster leadership skills among our community youth through educational opportunities and outreach as this program continues in 2019-2020. Our youth have the opportunity to learn about the operation of our local government, build and enhance their leadership skills, and foster their need to become more involved in helping with youth related issues.”

The DMYC serves as an advisory council to the mayor and city commission. Once the new class is selected, new members of the youth council will have several sessions which will include: orientation, discussion of city issues and brainstorming for new ideas for the Mayor and government leaders; collection of input through outreach, surveys, and community meetings; production of a city-wide youth town hall and television show; and participation in retreats, training, and travel experiences by building leadership skills. Participants must be students of Coffee County High School or private and home schools located within the city limits. Local principals, school counselors, the mayor, or commissioners may nominate students.

The DMYC will seat at least nine members who will serve a one to two year term or until finishing high school. Membership is open to grades 9-12, ages 14-19. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at 6 pm in the council room at City Hall. Students will be required to attend mandatory orientation and adhere to a planned itinerary for a one to two year term or until out of high school. The application deadline is January 15, 2019. To obtain an application or for more information, please visit the City of Douglas website, www.cityofdouglas.com/DMYC, or call the DMYC coordinator Dinitra Williams at (912) 331-9398.
