Oh the places you’ll go when you read a book you don’t know

By Lyndon Lashley, GWCFC Journalism Student

Recently on the George Washington Carver Freshman Campus, students and staff honored the beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss by celebrating his birthday through reading. Students and staff were presented with several incentives to encourage reading, such as checking out a book for an opportunity to win a Zaxby’s gift card and guessing candy in jars to win a gift certificate. Many students also took pictures with various props for a chance to win Dr. Seuss themed snacks for their third block class.  “Celebrating Dr. Seuss days are a great way to have fun and promote reading with the faculty, staff, and students,” says Media Specialist Angela Booth.

Every year thousands of schools celebrate Read Across America Week in honor of Dr. Seuss. The week of March 2 is the typical time for the celebration. Read Across America is also a program that is active at other special events throughout the year to promote reading to vast audiences. Many children and adults forget the value of reading which is why the week is such an important fun way to connect to reading through childhood stories. As Dr.Seuss states, “The more that you read, the more that you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Overall, the week was celebrated widely by not only students at GWCFC but, also by students all over the nation. Read Across America was memorable as students checked out books and earned prizes that they loved and helped celebrate a nation of diverse readers. The celebration also helped students discover new books that they enjoy reading. Reading is very important to help shape the minds of people of all ages, authors such as Dr. Seuss shared their words to the world which is why students honor them through reading during Read Across America week.
