DFD holding fundraisers to help one of its own

During difficult times or sickness, people often discover the goodness inside of each other.  City of Douglas employees are rallying to help aid one of their fellow workmates who has recently been diagnosed with cancer. Firefighter John Brown, works with the Douglas Fire Department, and has been diagnosed with a rare form of sarcoma cancer named Ewings Sarcoma.

John is a single father, raising two daughters, who are 12 and 14 years old.  To fight the cancer in his body, he has begun aggressive chemotherapy that will last for three months.  Once chemotherapy is completed, he will have to undergo surgery to remove and remnants of the cancer. Being a firefighter and first responder, John has put his life on the line for people and is dedicated to saving the life of others.  Since January, he has not been able to work, so the bills are piling up.

To help John with medical and living expenses, the Douglas Fire Department immediately began organizing fundraisers with the help of other employees and community friends.  On May 4, 2019, there will be a benefit motorcycle ride. Registration will take place beginning at 9 am, kick stands up at 11 am. Cost is $20 per bike, $10 additional riders. This will be an escorted ride and there will be a 50/50 drawing.  A chicken que fundraiser will take place on May 10, 2019 at 12noon. Chicken plate dinners are being sold with leg quarter, 2 sides, bread and dessert for $10. Pickup of chicken plates will be on May 10, 2019, 12 noon, at Fire Station #1, 110 East Gordon Street.

“Any donation, large or small, will help reach the goal and is wholeheartedly appreciated by John and his family,” says Assistant Fire Chief Casey Wright.  “We are asking our community to come together, support one of these fundraisers, and pray for John and his family.”

All proceeds of both fundraisers will go toward medical and living expenses.  A GoFundMe page has also been set up at
