SGSC’s Marisol Vargas receives Ty Cobb Educational Foundation Scholarship

South Georgia State College (SGSC) sophomore Marisol Vargas has been awarded a $3,000 Ty Cobb Educational Foundation Scholarship for the 2019-2020 academic year. Vargas, from Pearson, will graduate from the SGSC nursing program this spring and will being work in SGSC’s RN-BSN program this fall.

The Ty Cobb Educational Foundation, established by famous baseball player Tyrus R. Cobb, was created for the purpose of assisting capable and deserving residents of Georgia who need financial assistance in completing their college education. Cobb, a native of Royston, Georgia, was unparalleled as a baseball star for most of his 24-year major league career. To date, the Ty Cobb Educational Foundation has awarded more than $17.5 million to Georgia students.

“Knowing that I am a recipient of this scholarship has already decreased a lot of the stress and worry that I will face while pursuing my RN-BSN and the expenses that come along with it,” Vargas said. “I know that I still have many trials and tribulations that I will face in the future, but with foundations and organizations like this, it has helped me realize that everything you set forth to do can be accomplished with hard work and dedication. I am so thankful and appreciative to this foundation for the opportunities it gives to students like myself.”

As a student, Vargas has been a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the Georgia Association of Nursing Students (GANS). She has also served as a peer tutor in the Academic Success Center and presented in several of SGSC’s Undergraduate Research Symposiums. As she is working toward her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at SGSC, she plans to work in Waycross as a labor and delivery nurse. She will continue with her education to obtain a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) to eventually become a family nurse practitioner.
