A third candidate has entered the District 5 county commission race. Hal McCallum has announced via his personal Facebook page his intention to seek the office. Ted O’Steen and Howard Holt have already announced their plans to run as well. Qualifying ends today at noon and at least two other potential candidates have expressed interest in running.

The seat became vacant after the death of Commissioner Charles “Scooter Bill” Deen on April 25, 2019, following an extended illness.

Here is McCallum’s announcement:

“I’m announcing my candidacy for Coffee County Commissioner race, District 5.

“I’m humbled as for the reason this vacancy took place. Scooter Bill Deen was a good man and served our district well, and my condolences go out to his family.

“I have a son, Matt McCallum, his wife Holly Smith McCallum, twin girls and a grandson. I also have a wonderful daughter, Anna Ruth McCallum, and her friend, Jordan Gillis, also my mother Mary Jo McCallum and friend Herman Purvis, and my dad, the late Donald McCallum whom I still miss every day. I consider Deberry Baptist Church and congregation my family also and everyone is welcome to come join in with us.

“With this being said for my family and yours, I would ask for the opportunity to continue to make our Coffee County a great and safe place to live and I humbly ask for your vote and support for Coffee County Commissioner District 5 race on June 18th. Please feel free to call me at 229-425-3151 or contact me on Facebook or by email at halmccallum@yahoo.com

“May God Bless each of you and the other candidates running in this race also.”
