Georgia Chamber president visits CRMC

Coffee Regional Medical Center welcomed Chris Clark, President and CEO of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, for his presentation of the “New Georgia Economy” to Coffee County’s CEO Roundtable and community business leaders on Monday, May 20, 2019.

Mr. Clark spoke on the future of Georgia’s economy and how workforce demand and development will need to continually shift to meet the needs of an economy that is ever-changing with the digital information revolution. The presentation enlightened participants on the future of not only Georgia’s workforce, but also the global workforce.

Additionally, Mr. Clark stressed that recruitment by employers into communities like Douglas-Coffee County is no longer about location, location, location, but is about talent, talent, talent. He highlighted the importance of recruiting and retaining talent in the community in order to stay ahead of this ever-changing economy.  He continued on to stress how local leadership is pivotal to the success of a local economy when it comes to recruiting both talent and industry.

Have you ever heard of a “Gig Economy?” It’s not what you may initially think – as in computer gigs. Gig Economy refers to those who have multiple “gigs” or jobs. Uber drivers are a great example of those working in the new Gig Economy. This Gig Economy is growing the need for more entrepreneurial skills within our schools. Programs to educate our children on the basics of starting a business will be important as this Gig Economy grows. There will be many challenges such as health benefits and retirement accounts that must be able to adapt to this new, growing economy. Mr. Clark shared, that everyone should learn to understand the many facets of this new Gig Economy, as it is slated to make-up 40 percent of the workforce by 2020.

Mr. Clark discussed another disruptor of the economy is artificial intelligence (AI). You may not know exactly what AI is, until you realize your friends “Siri” and “Alexa” are just that. AI is a multi-trillion dollar industry that will continue to grow rapidly. Artificial intelligence will be integral in changing much of what the workforce looks like today. The future of AI is beyond what anyone can imagine today.
