Junior shotgun team places third in recent competition

By Kevin Tatum

University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service

The Coffee County 4-H shotgun team traveled to Savannah for the weekend of May 25-26 to compete in the Georgia 4-H Trap, Skeet, and Sport Clays Match. The match was held at the Forest City Gun Club. Coffee 4-H had a senior 4-H team (grade 9-12) and a junior 4-H team (7th & 8th graders), both composed of four individuals, to compete in the match. Teams can be composed of three to four members. Senior 4-H team members included Hudson Lott, Drew Purvis, Michael Roberts, and Avery Vincent. The junior 4-H team included Alex Dunn, Gavin Grantham, J.P. Harper, and Weston Vickers. Senior shooters shoot 100 rounds in Trap, 100 rounds in Skeet, and 100 rounds in Sporting Clays. For junior shooters, it is only 75 rounds in each contest event.

The Junior Team had a great day shooting and placed third place overall in the match. Alex Dunn was recognized for having the highest score in the junior sporting clay match as well as the second highest overall score in the junior competition.

Coaches for the teams include Richard Grantham and Jody Ridlehoover. A special thank you goes out to our coaches for their dedicated service and to the shotgun team parents for their support of all of the team members competing. Congratulations shooters and coaches on your successes this year.

Goat Show Information

It’s time to get signed up for the coming year’s County and State 4-H and FFA Goat Shows. We will be holding tagging day for the goats at the Coffee Middle School Livestock Building on Monday, June 24, from 5 to 6:30 PM. In case someone has a conflict with this date, we will have a second tagging date on Tuesday, July 16, from 5 to 6:30 PM. Please come prepared to complete all necessary paperwork, assist with tagging your goats, and pay your registration fees. For more information, please contact the 4-H office at (912) 384-1402, or any of the Coffee County School System agriculture teachers at Coffee Middle, Coffee High, or George Washington Carver Freshman Campuses.

4-H Reward Trip

Each year, 4-H members are given the opportunity to earn points in 4-H by doing activities. Members who earn 300 or more points and competed in a 4-H competition such as DPA, livestock show, target sports competition, or judging event contest, are eligible to attend the end of the year reward trip. This year’s reward trip was to Wild Adventures Park in Valdosta, GA. The 4-H members had the opportunity to ride the rides, hang out at the water park, and go see the exotic animals.

Winners’ Workshop

State 4-H Congress is a competition for 4-H members who won first place or a sweepstake trip by competing in Senior District Project Achievement (DPA). (Senior 4-H is students 9th through 12th grades and a sweepstakes trip is earned by placing second in a project with 8 or more competitors.) In order to help 4-H members prepare for the state contest, Southeast District 4-H hosts two winner’s workshops (one in the northern part and one in the southern part of the district) each summer. This year’s workshop for our students will be in Alma at the Extension office on Wednesday, June 26. At the workshop, students will have a review of what to expect at State Congress as well as dress code and table etiquette lessons, two opportunities to present their presentation and be critiqued, and two practice interviews over information in the 4-H portfolio.

Coffee County 4-H members participating include Savannah Cothern (Dairy Foods project), Jackson Cowart (Computer Information Technology project), Muskan Minhas (International project), and Evie Woodward (Performing Arts-Vocal project).

State 4-H Congress will be in Atlanta July 23-26. Good luck to all of our participants.

If you have questions about the Coffee County 4-H Club program, or questions around the farm or home, please feel free to contact the Coffee County Extension office at (912) 384-1402. Remember, we are YOUR local connection to the University of Georgia.
