June 17-21 was a busy week for seventh and eighth grade 4-H members who attended junior 4-H camp at Camp Jekyll. Over 220 students and 20 adults from 35 counties took part in the week’s activities. During the week, the students enjoyed workshops at the camp facility such as the herpetology/maritime forest class, as well as canoeing, a boat tour, bicycle rides around Jekyll Island, seining in the Atlantic Ocean, visiting the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, and beach ecology on driftwood beach. They also went swimming at the beach and at Summer Waves Water Park, had dances, recreation, and much more.

Participants from Coffee County included Sophie Bird, Nathan Cooper, Kilee Davis, Abygail Harper, Janilla Warren, Christian Wilson, and Carlee Woods. I served as their chaperon for the trip. We had a great time and learned a lot about the Georgia coastline while at Camp Jekyll.

State 4-H Council

Due to some expected situations at camp last week, State 4-H Council had to be postponed. There was an outbreak of a stomach virus at 4-H camp, and camp officials took the precautionary stance to disinfect the whole camp facility using a professional cleaning service.

The new dates for State 4-H Council will be July 5-7. The weekend will include the annual “Iron Clover” competition, Georgia 4-H Citizenship Ceremony, a Georgia 4-H Clovers & Co. show (including Coffee County’s own Evie Woodward), and election of the 2019-2020 Georgia 4-H State Board of Directors. The students will also enjoy a big Rock Eagle dance on Saturday evening. 4-H’ers signed up for State Council include Jeremiah Brantley, Savannah Cothern, and Evie Woodward.

If you have questions about the Coffee County 4-H Club program, or questions around the farm or home, please feel free to contact the Coffee County Extension office at (912) 384-1402. Remember, we are YOUR local connection to the University of Georgia.
