David Lee Viness, age 77, of Douglas, passed away early on Friday August 23, 2019 at St. Vincent’s Riverside Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. Viness was born on November 16, 1941 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was the son of the late Jack and the late Frances Viness.

He was manager and co-owner of a truck line most of his career. He loved his Georgia Bulldogs and he played for his beloved team in the late 1950s. Mr. Viness was a dedicated American, and he was proud to have served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He never outgrew his love of making and flying model airplanes and he had many on display in his home. Also, fishing was a passion for Mr. Viness. He enjoyed the time spent in nature as he fished.

Mr. Viness spent most of his life in Woodstock, Georgia, but he moved to Douglas a little over three years ago. He became a member of the Douglas First United Methodist Church and he was pleased to find such a good church home.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include: two sons, Terry Lee Viness and wife Rhonda of Marietta, Georgia and David Scott Viness and wife Joy of Acworth, Georgia; four grandchildren, Bo Viness and wife Stephanie of Statesboro, Georgia, Morgan Jordan and husband Alex of Marietta, Georgia, Jacob Viness of Marietta, Georgia and Brock Viness of Marietta, Georgia; one great granddaughter, Clara Jordan of Marietta, Georgia; two sisters, Betty Royal and husband Bonwell of Douglas, Georgia and Eleanor Jeanie Wyper and husband Andy of Peachtree City, Georgia; one loving niece and three loving nephews; and a very special friend, Marge McCartney of Lake Park, Georgia.

Visitation will take place at Douglas First United Methodist Church on September 7, 2019 from 10 am until 11 am. The memorial service will follow at 11 am at the church. The service will be conducted by David’s pastor, the Reverend Doug Walker. Mrs. Tania Meyers will present the tribute to Mr. Viness in music and song.

Interment will be in the Veteran’s Cemetery in Canton, Georgia at a later date.

Sims Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
