Mayor’s youth council names outstanding youth at monthly meeting

The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council (DMYC) held its monthly meeting on August 15, 2019, at 6pm at City Hall and recognized three outstanding youth in the community. The council also heard presentations from the Community Foundation regarding improvements at Wheeler Park and the Ambitious Young Men (A.Y.M.) and the First Love Yourself Girls (F.L.Y.) organizations about events coming up for local youth.

For the month of August, Candace Pace was chosen as the Outstanding Youth Council Member to spotlight, Anagrace Scholten and Key’Shun Holmes, were chosen as Outstanding Youth in the Community.

At church, she is a part of the Youth Choir and Culinary Committee.  Candice has been involved in 4-H since she was five years old. Candice serves the community by visiting elderly homes and assisting with beautification projects in the community.  These volunteer efforts have helped her to display her teaching and learning leadership skills. Ms. Pace was handpicked by teachers to represent Coffee High School at the Hugh O’ Brian Youth Leadership or (HOBY) Seminar for the South East Area in 2018 and became a HOBY alumni. Attending the seminar, encouraged her to complete the 100hour community service challenge and she was chosen to return as a Junior Staffer for the 2019 HOBY Georgia South East seminar. She is also involved in One Act, Drama Club, Thespian Society and has been in involved in CHS Chorus for four years.

Anagrace Scholten, is the daughter of Joel and Amanda Scholten.  Anagrace attends First Baptist Church, where she is very involved in the youth program. Scholten is also active in CHS Varsity Tennis and is a CHS Cheerleader.   While participating in the Cheerleading program, she has been nominated for All-American during her freshman, sophomore, junior and senior years. Key’Shun Holmes, is the son of Latoya Holmes-McRae and McKale Ross, is a Douglas native, who at 21 years old has become an young entrepreneur.  Key’Shun launched his business and brand, Rich Royal USA, in 2018. He began his branding immediately after high school in hopes of setting an example for the youth to fulfill their true desires in life despite what they’re told they cannot do. Within one year of business, the brand has picked up several celebrity endorsements and has reached 40 states in the U.S.  After providing shirts for the Coffee High School Class of 2019, the brand is currently an official vendor for Clark Atlanta University.

The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council fosters leadership skills and allows students to be an advisory council to the Mayor and Commission.  Members of the council have monthly meetings which will include discussion of city issues and brainstorming for new ideas for the Mayor and government leaders; volunteerism, participation in retreats, training, and travel experiences.

The DMYC wants to hear from citizens about youth in our community that are doing exceptional things with their lives.  To submit a youth or youth group to be recognized, please contact Dinitra Williams, Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council Coordinator, at dwilliams@cityofdouglas.com or call the City Clerk’s office at (912) 389-3405.
