Wiregrass holds ribbon cutting for mobile welding lab

With the enrollment in the Wiregrass Georgia Technical College Welding program on the Coffee Campus increasing, the need for more space was answered by the Technical College System of Georgia sending a Mobile Welding Lab to the campus.  The mobile welding unit is outfitted with one virtual welder, six multi-process Lincoln welders, and a flux core weld, along with six complete welding tool sets.   The mobile lab also has a rod oven air compressor, a power max 65 plasma cutter, a classroom and office area.

“The incredible design of the mobile welding lab allows Wiregrass to utilize it for students on our campus, but also allows us the flexibility to travel and provide training throughout our entire service area. With the mobile welding lab, welding training can literally be delivered to the front door of any industry within our 11 counties, making workforce development more convenient than ever before,” shared Joe Sumner, Associate Vice President of Program Development.

On hand to witness the ribbon cutting were faculty and staff from the Coffee County Schools Wiregrass Regional Career and College Academy, Douglas- Coffee County Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Authority officials, Wiregrass Foundation, and welding students including high school students who are taking Dual Enrollment classes with Wiregrass.

The Welding program qualifies for the HOPE Career Grant, where if one qualifies for the HOPE and/or Zell Miller Grant, they could be eligible for additional monies that could pay for their college tuition, fees, and/or books.  To learn more about the Welding program and other programs, visit Wiregrass.edu.  Wiregrass is currently accepting students for Fall Express term, classes start September 19.
