City commissioner Kentaiwon Carter Durham has been selected to serve on the Board of Directors by the Georgia Municipal Black Caucus (GMBC).  In his capacity as a director, Durham will represent Georgia’s 10th District and will serve as a committee chair.

According to the GMBC President, Rufus Davis of Camilla, “We are excited to have someone who could further strengthen the talent, wisdom and diverse backgrounds of our board membership.  Councilman Durham, is respected among his peers and will work hard to address the needs of our communities.”

The GMBC is a statewide membership organization and its mission is to engage in advocacy and activities that support the needs of its African-American constituency.  The state of Georgia has more than 2,000 African-American officials across several towns and cities who represent over one million African-American voters.

“I am honored to join the board of directors and I look forward to offering my perspective and experience learned through my time as a public servant and through GMA training,” said Durham.  “Over the next year, we will be rolling out a very aggressive and exciting legislative agenda that should have a great impact on improving rural and small communities.”

The GMBC legislative agenda, called Five Points of Light, consists of five resolutions:  a) A signature bail ordinance that eliminates cash bail for people who commit low-level offenses but whom are unable to post bail; b) Decriminalizing the possession of marijuana, less than an ounce, making it a cite a release offense; c) Conducting an expungement project to clean criminal records for eligible ex-offenders of non-violent offenses; d) Passing a minimum wage law to ensure that the working poor can better support their families; and e) A minority contracting program to ensure fairness in city contracting.
