Ms. Nora Gene Tanner Melton, age 81 of Alma, passed away Sunday, September 1, 2019 at her residence following an extended illness. Ms. Melton was born July 29, 1938 to the late George Washington Tanner and the late Nora Thigpen Tanner. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, Carris Bennett and James E. Brooks; a daughter, Carolyn Carter; sisters Coree Warren, Nancy Taylor and Shirley Lott; brothers B.H. Tanner, Thigpen Tanner, Lindberg Tanner, Calvin Tanner and Pomp Tanner.

Ms. Melton, a native of Nicholls, had been a seamstress with Ethical Sewing Factory. She attended Liberty Christian Church in Waycross.

Survivors include: Children: James Bennett of Alma, Nancy Slaughter of Alma, Sandra Meeks of Waycross, Wanda Hutto of Alma, and Ina Kay Bennett of Dixie Union; sister Jaunita Griffin of Ocilla; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

The funeral service was Friday, September 6, 2019 at 4:00 P.M. at Chapel of Ricketson Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Jefferson officiating. The interment followed in Meeks Cemetery near Nicholls.

Ricketson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
