SGSC to offer bachelor’s in Professional, Business, and Technical Writing

Beginning in spring semester 2020, South Georgia State College (SGSC) will launch the new Bachelor of Arts in Professional, Business, and Technical Writing. This is an interdisciplinary program that will provide students with critical knowledge and skills focusing on professional business and technical writing, building on English and other existing courses from SGSC’s current bachelor’s degree in management.

The need for workforce expertise in technical writing for business and industry is based on projections data for national and state employment of entry-level and managerial occupations. These occupations relate to technical writing in fields that include but are not limited to technical writing, marketing, public relations, fundraising, media communications (including electronic media) and research analysis.

“The B.A. in Professional, Business, and Technical Writing goes beyond rhetoric and composition. It prepares students for 21st Century careers in writing, including advertising, multimedia expertise, and digital literacy,” states Dr. Joseph Holloway, program chair. “While this interdisciplinary degree prepares students for a number of career paths, most importantly, it prepares students to write and communicate effectively in any career.”

The new Bachelor of Arts in Professional, Business, and Technical Writing expands SGSC’s academic offerings that include Bachelor of Science Degrees in Biological Sciences, Management, Nursing, and Long-Term Healthcare Management. Tuition for SGSC’s bachelor’s degree programs is offered at the same tuition rate as its associate degree pathways. This makes earning a bachelor’s degree from SGSC more affordable than similar bachelor’s degree programs at other colleges or universities.

Two information sessions will be held in October for those interested in the program. The meeting on the Douglas campus will be Wednesday, Oct. 23, in Davis Hall, room 202, from 2 – 3 p.m. The meeting on the Waycross campus will be Thursday, Oct. 24, in the Education Building, room 119, from 2 – 3 p.m.

If you are unable to attend one of the sessions or for more information about SGSC’s new Bachelor of Arts in Professional, Business, and Technical Writing, please contact Dr. Joseph Holloway at 912.449.7587 or 912.260.4252 or by email at joseph.holloway@sgsc.edu.
