SGSC Foundation honors scholarship recipients and donors

On Oct. 24, the South Georgia State College Foundation held a reception for scholarship donors to be introduced to students who benefited significantly from their generosity, and students had the opportunity to thank their donors in person.

During the 2019-2020 academic year, the SGSC Foundation provided support totaling over $128,000 in assistance for SGSC students.

SGSC Foundation President Dr. Tracy McClelland shared a message of thanks to the Foundation’s scholarship donors, “Every student deserves the chance to obtain a college degree and we are fortunate that our alumni and greater community agree and have joined our Board to help our college and our region grow and prosper,” she stated

Asia Denning a freshman from Douglas and Ernest Wesley a sophomore from Fitzgerald each expressed how beneficial scholarship support was to them in their college journey.

Denning stated, “Receiving this scholarship has been such a blessing. It has allowed me to be a role model for young girls I mentor at the Boys and Girls Club. They can see if you work hard, you can achieve your goals and people will support you. I plan to major in criminal justice and go into forensic psychology.”

Wesley who aspires to be in the sports industry commented, “This scholarship has lightened my financial burden and allowed me to focus on learning as well as allowed me to be involved in campus organizations that have given me leadership skills. The generosity shown to me has inspired me to help others and give back to the community when I begin my career.”

SGSC President, Dr. Ingrid Thompson-Sellers, shared some special remarks and took time to express her appreciation to the College’s supporters. She commented, “SGSC exists to serve students; thus, we rely on giving individuals and businesses like you to open doors and create possibilities for our students. Thank you so much for making a positive impact.”

Founded in 1971, the SGSC Foundation’s mission is to help transform and enhance the lives of SGSC’s diverse student population by providing educational opportunities, financial support and advocacy for students. The Foundation supports efforts that enhance the quality of programs by funding scholarships, new academic initiatives, faculty/staff development, athletic programs and capital projects at SGSC.

All contributions to the SGSC Foundation are tax deductible. For more information about the scholarship opportunities or to make a donation, please contact Ms. Walda Kight, vice president for Institutional Advancement, by phone at (912) 260-4274 or by email at Walda.Kight@sgsc.edu.
