Former Coffee County chief magistrate judge Betty Day Lanier has died. She was 83.

Mrs. Lanier, of Douglas, passed away on Saturday January 11, 2020 at Vista Park Health and Rehabilitation. She was born on November 29, 1936 in Coffee County, the daughter of the late Hayden Henry Day and the late Annie Ree Ragsdale Day.

 

Mrs. Lanier was a retired county employee with thirty plus years of service in many department areas, including chief magistrate. She was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Lanier; sister and husband, Judy and W.T. Johnson; and brother and wife, Joe and Margaret Day.

 

Survivors include three sons, Tony Harrell (Lydia) of Portland, Tenn., Terry Harrell (Holli) of Beth Page, Tenn., and Tommy Harrell (Lynn) of Douglas; four grandchildren, Joshua Harrell, Courtney Sheffield (Chris), Hanna Roberts (Blake) and Hayden Harrell (Emily); eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends Monday evening January 13, 2020 from 6pm until 8pm at Sims Funeral Home.

 

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday January 14, 2020 at 11:00am from the Chapel of Sims Funeral Home with Rev. John Carver officiating. Johnny Wayne Jowers will give the eulogy. Interment will follow at Douglas City Cemetery.

 

Pallbearers will be deputies of the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office. Special music will be “Go Rest High on that Mountain” and “Praise His Name” rendered by Mrs. Shanda Jowers. Prelude and postlude music will be provided by pianist, Karen Purvis.

 

Sims Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
