Coffee High School senior Ashni Patel won American Legion Post 515’s speech contest Friday at Citizens Christian Academy. She was one of three contestants who participated in the contest.

The contest consisted of an eight- to ten-minute oration, developed by each contestant based on his or her knowledge and understanding of the Constitution as well as personal experience.  After the initial speech, each contestant delivered a second three to five minute speech selected by a panel of judges from a list of published assigned topic.

Three promising contestants accepted the challenge to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the Constitution.

For her win, Ashni will receive a $500 scholarship, Certificate of Commendation and an opportunity to represent Post 515 in the 12th District contest on Saturday, February 8 in Tifton. Jenna Williams, a 10th grader from Citizens Christian Academy won second place. She will receive a $250 scholarship, Certificate of Commendation and will serve as alternate at the 12th District contest in case the first-place contestant is unable to participate.  Amber Whitley, a 9th grader from George Washington Carver Freshman Campus is the third-place winner.  She will receive a $50 scholarship and a Certificate of Participation. These scholarships will be awarded once the contestants enroll in an institution of higher education.

The contest is opened to students in grades nine through 12.  Post 515 is already seeking contestants for next year.  For information, contact Jerome Loving at 912-592-6413.
