Betty Jean Hursey Smith, age 83, of Douglas, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at her residence. Mrs. Smith was born on April 14, 1936, in Douglas to the late Arthur Lott Hursey and Annie Belle Sears Hursey.

She was a member of Calvary Temple Church in Atlanta, Ga., a para-professional at Satilla Elementary School, and served as President of American Legion Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joel Thomas Smith, 

Survivors include: Sons, Joel Anthony Smith of Douglas, GA, William Mark Smith (Tracy) of Lithia Springs, GA; grandchildren, Amanda Smith, Garrett Myers, Spencer Myers; great-grandchildren, Holden Myers, Avery Simpson; sister-in-law, Carolyn (Jimmy) Weeks of Douglas, GA; several nieces and nephews. 

The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 19, 2020 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 Pm at Sims Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Tanner Baptist Church with Rev. Buddy Jordan officiating and Ron Adams delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Spencer Myers, Peyton Adams, Charles Byrd, Carter Luke Byrd, Ian Butler and Zane Adams.

Memorials may be made to Tanner Baptist Church or Satilla Elementary School Library.

Sims Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
