Police department to hold Citizens’ Police Academy course

The Douglas Police Department will be conducting a Citizens’ Police Academy course beginning Thursday, April 16, 2020, 6 pm, at the Douglas Police Department. The course lasts eight weeks and a light meal and refreshments will be provided. The course will cover numerous areas and is designed to introduce and inform citizens of the role of Law Enforcement in the community and familiarize them with some of the applications of law. 

“We hope to offer our community a better insight to our day to day operations during these 8 sessions,” says Douglas Police Chief, Shane Edmisten. “The Citizens’ Police Academy will be an educational experience for everyone who participates.” 

The class hours will be from 6 pm to approximately 8 pm every Thursday night beginning April 16th through June 4. Some of the topics covered will be: Police Department Structure, Crime Scene Processing, Family Violence, Juvenile law, Gangs, Evidence Procedures, Patrol Operations, Use of Force, Firearms Training, Internal Affairs, Complaint process, Disciplinary process, and participants will conduct a ride along with an officer during the course. 

You do not have to be a resident of Douglas to attend this course. It is open to all citizens over 18 years of age. Class maximum will be 20 participants; minimum will be 12. Registration deadline is April 9, 2020. Registration forms are available at the Douglas Police Department or contact Corporal Patrick West at (912) 384-2222 or e-mail at pwest@cityofdouglas.com.
