The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council (DMYC) held its monthly meeting on Thursday, February 20, 2020, at 6pm at City Hall and recognized outstanding youth in the community. The council also heard presentations from the City of Douglas Human Resource Department, South Georgia State College Recruitment and Financial Aid offices, and information about the upcoming 2020 Census.

For the month of February 2020, Jessica Suarez was chosen as the Outstanding Youth Council Member to spotlight.  Jessica is serving her first-year as a member of the Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council. Suarez is a Senior attending Coffee High School.  She is a leader in NJROTC and an outstanding youth leader in the community.

Cody Beasley, Jenna Williams, and Guadalupe Torres were chosen as February’s Outstanding Youth in the Community by the Mayor’s Youth Council.  Cody is a senior at Citizens Christian Academy and the son of Jeff and Lori Beasley. He has perfect attendance in school from Kindergarten – 12th grade.  Beasley is extremely active in FFA, Leo Club, Covenant Church, and the community. Cody has been accepted into ABAC where he will attend for one year before transferring in the Agri-Science program at UGA Tifton to complete a BSA in Agri-Science and Environmental Systems (Plant Breeding and Genetics).  Upon completion, he would like to acquire his doctorate in Plant Breeding, Genetics, and Genomics.

Jenna Williams, was selected as an exemplary youth in the community for February.  Jenna attends Citizens Christian Academy and is in the 12th grade. Jenna has perfect attendance and has been involved in many school clubs and community organizations.  Jenna is active in FFA, FCA, Key Club, Leo Club, Literary, and One Act Play at Citizens Christian Academy. Williams has represented her school by attending Envision’s National Youth Leadership Conference in Washington DC and will be representing Douglas-Coffee County at the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Conference this summer at Georgia College.  Jenna is a scholar athlete and has been active in many sports.

Guadalupe Torres was chosen by the Mayor’s Youth Council as an outstanding peer in the community.  Ms. Torres is active both at school and in the community. Torres serves as a leader with the NJROTC. She has many accomplishments with Soccer and excels academically. Additionally, she serves as an inspiration to her peers.

The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council fosters leadership skills and allows students to be an advisory council to the Mayor and Commission.  Members of the council have monthly meetings which include discussion of city issues and brainstorming for new ideas for the Mayor and government leaders, volunteerism, participation in retreats, training, and travel experiences.

The next DMYC meeting will be held on March 19, 2020, 6pm at City Hall.  Youth applications are now being accepted for the 2020-2021 school year. To submit a youth for Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council or Douglas-Coffee County Teen Court, please contact Dinitra Williams, Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council Coordinator, at dwilliams@cityofdouglas.com or call the City Clerk’s office at (912-389-3405).
