Roy Chapman Mathews Sr, age 72, of Douglas, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2020 at his residence. Mr. Mathews was born on January 17, 1948 in Coffee County, Georgia, the son of the late Horace and Sally Luenell Vickers Mathews.

 

Mr. Mathews was self-employed in sales, a member of Green Acres Baptist Church and loved football, especially the Florida State Seminoles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Debbie Dyal Mathews and a brother, Don Mathews.

 

Survivors include his daughter, Leslie Teston (Stacey) of Douglas, GA; son, Roy Chapman Mathews Jr (Brittney) of Bainbridge, GA; four grandchildren, Mathew Kade Teston of Douglas, GA, Morgan Sallie Elizabeth Teston of Douglas, GA, Ramsey Elizabeth Mathews of Bainbridge, GA and Carlee Brock Mathews of Bainbridge, GA; two brothers, John Mathews (Sue) of Douglas, GA and Dicky Horace Mathews of Broxton, GA; several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at 2:00pm at Tanner Baptist Church with Rev. Buddy Jordan and Rev. John Mathews giving the eulogy. Interment will follow in Tanner Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 12 noon until time of service at 2pm at Tanner Baptist Church.

 

Sims Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Those attending are asked to maintain the recommended safe social distancing of six feet and wear protective masks in accordance with the State of Georgia guidelines concerning the coronavirus.
