Kevin Tatum, County Extension Coordinator

With the state and local fairs being cancelled this year, Coffee County 4-H has decided to offer fair contests at the local level. Contests for 4-H members include: Computer Graphic Design, Decorated Agricultural Products, Mini-booth Exhibit, Recycling, Terrarium/Dish Garden, Seed Art, Decorated Pumpkin, and a Family Scarecrow Contest. You may get a copy of the rules for each contest/event from the 4H office or by visiting the Coffee County 4-H website at coffee4h.org under the “4-H Forms and Web Links” page. Registration forms and exhibits/entries must be turned in to the county 4‑H office by 4 PM on Thursday, October 1. No late entries will be accepted.

Statewide Junior Conference

Let’s get together for an awesome weekend at Rock Eagle 4-H Center where you will be having loads of fun with friends from all over the state of Georgia. Junior 4-H members (7th and 8th graders) will meet new friends, do service projects, participate in workshops and an exhibit fair, have a dance, and see Clovers & Company perform. The conference will be held on November 7-8 at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center and will cost around $90-$100 depending on when you register. The fee for the conference is $95. To get a $5 early bird registration discount, your fee must be turned in by 4 PM on September 25. The last day to register without a $5 late fee is Friday, October 23. Don’t delay. Get your registration fee turned in immediately if you are interested in going to this fun conference.

Horse Club

The Coffee County 4-H Horse Club is getting prepared to hold their first meeting for the school year on Tuesday, October 13. The meeting will be held in the Family Ministry Center at the Douglas First Baptist Church beginning at 7 PM. Due to COVID-19 spacing requirements, we ask that only one parent attend the meeting with the 4‑H member (no siblings please).

The 4-H Horse Club is primarily for 4-H members who plan to participate in the State 4-H Horse Show. The State 4-H Horse Show will be held in Perry on June 8-12. Registration for the state show requires an Intent to Show Form by March 5 and then the Class Registration Form and fees will be due by May 7.

Please contact the 4-H office if you would like additional information.

Target Sports Coaches Training

4-H target sports programs are totally dependent on volunteers to organize and run them. It takes a special kind of person to want to work with teaching students how to properly handle firearms and compete in a safe manner. If you know of an adult who would be great at this and would like to help with one of our 4-H programs, please have them contact the 4‑H office at 384-1402. A Certified Coaches Training will be held at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton, Georgia, on October 16-17 and we need to get them enrolled as soon as possible. These volunteers must complete the UGA Volunteer Leader application and agreement and successfully pass a background check before being eligible to attend the training, so don’t delay.

If you would like to learn how you can become more involved with the Coffee County 4-H program, please contact the Coffee County Extension office at (912) 384-1402 or visit our website at http://coffee4h.org.
