Mr. James Herman Merritt, age 76 of Nicholls, passed away Monday afternoon, October 19, 2020 at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Merritt was born November 20, 1943 to the late Brooks Merritt and the late Reba Hutchison Merritt Davis. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Brooks Merritt.

Mr. Merritt, a native of Coffee County, had retired as a truck driver for Griffin Feed and Seed. He was a member of St. Illa Baptist Church but had attended New Beginnings Holy Ghost Tabernacle.

Survivors include:

Wife: Laverne Anderson Merritt of Nicholls, GA

Children: Sonya Merritt and Tonya Merritt both of Nicholls, GA
Sabrina Musgrove of Millwood, GA
Andy Merritt of Douglas, GA
Teddy Merritt of Perry, GA
Sean McElroy of Nicholls, GA

Siblings: Aubrey Joe Merritt of Douglas, GA
H. B. Merritt of Nicholls, GA
Betty Sue Deems of Nicholls, GA

14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren

Several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends

The funeral service will be Thursday, October 22, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. at Chapel of Ricketson Funeral Home with Rev. Darrell Smith officiating. The interment will follow in Griffin Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening, October 21, 2020 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Ricketson Funeral Home.

Musical selections for the service will be “Go Rest High on that Mountain” and “Amazing Grace” presented by Jessica Lyons.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Thomas, Jason Jewell, Joe Mizell, Joseph Mizell, Tim Summerlin and Rail McNear.

Please note, due to COVID-19, attendees are asked to observe six foot social distancing at the funeral service, visitation and gravesite. Please wear you mask for safety precautions, and in accordance with CDC guidelines. We do not furnish masks.

Ricketson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
