Mayor’s youth council recognizes Emma Rish, London O’Steen

The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council (DMYC) held their monthly meeting on Wednesday, November 18, 2020, 2pm, at Citizens Christian Academy. Topics for the November meeting included discussion about their role in the future of Douglas-Coffee County, Adoption Awareness Month, and recognition of November’s outstanding community youth.   

 

For the month of November, the Youth Council, chose to spotlight Jr. Commissioner London O’Steen.  Ms. O’Steen is a 9th grade student at Citizens Christian Academy.  She is an active member First Baptist Church.  Her activities at school include Leo Club, Key Club, FCA, FFA, Basketball and Softball.  After graduating, she plans to attend the University of Georgia and obtain an undergraduate degree in Biology and pursue a degree in Dermatology at medical school. 

 

The Outstanding Community Youth for November is Ms. Emma Rish.  Emma, is the daughter of Dickey and Stacey Rish.  She is a Senior at Citizens Christian Academy.  Ms. Rish attends church at The Sanctuary and enjoys playing basketball and softball. She has committed to East Georgia State College to continue playing softball.  Emma has played softball for many years of her life.  She has been on the CCA Varsity Softball team for 5 years and has received recognition for All-Region player her 9th-12th grade years.  Emma was awarded the title of an All-State player this year.

 

The guest speaker for November was Ms. Kaitlyn Tanner, a CCA student who is an advocate for adoption.  Kaitlyn participates in CCA Basketball, Track, and competes in pageants.  She is the current Miss South Georgia Sweetheart.  Being an adopted child, Kaitlyn is passionate about her platform on adoption and how adoption builds families.  She has created a coloring book title “Adoption Wins.”  Together with Covenant Care, she created adoption awareness bracelets and has helped raise over $30,000 for adoptions.  After speaking to the Youth Council, the Youth Council signed a proclamation for November as Adoption Awareness Month.

 

The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council is seeking new members for the 2021-2022 term who will be entering grades 9-12.  To submit a student to be considered for the Youth Council, please contact Dinitra Williams, Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council Coordinator, at dwilliams@cityofdouglas.com or call the City Clerk’s office at (912) 389-3405.
