The highly awaited eighth baccalaureate program at South Georgia State College (SGSC) has been given a final endorsement and is preparing to accept students for the fall 2021 semester. SGSC has received approval from Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to offer the new Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology (BSMET) degree beginning this fall. The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia initially approved the new program on September 15, 2020 before its consideration by SACSCOC.

“What began as a vision for me soon after arriving at South Georgia State College has now become a reality,” said SGSC President Dr. Ingrid Thompson-Sellers. “As part of our strategic plan, Moving Forward, we committed to establishing a number of new programs by 2024 to add to our baccalaureate portfolio. The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology degree was one I felt was needed for our community because of the feedback I received when I became a part of the college. Interest in a mechanical engineering technology program was expressed from local industry partners and other community stakeholders as a way to help meet the need for a specific skill that is in high demand within the local workforce. This program will meet those needs and become an avenue for students to obtain a high-quality degree that will position them for future success in the local job market.”

The BSMET program is designed to prepare students with a wide range of technical manufacturing design, development, operation and evaluation skills. Courses will be delivered through a combination of face-to-face and online instruction and will be housed in the SGSC School of Sciences.  There will be concentrations in engineering, mathematics and science in addition to completing SGSC’s core curriculum courses. The program will also incorporate experiential learning opportunities through internships and hands-on training in order for students to apply the knowledge they are learning.

Keeping affordability in mind, the BSMET program will also be offered at the same credit hour rate as SGSC’s associate degree pathways.  Students enrolled in the program will be eligible to receive federal financial aid. Opportunities for scholarships through the SGSC Foundation and James M. Dye Foundation are also available. Students can apply for admissions to SGSC at www.sgsc.edu/apply in preparation for the start of the program set for Fall Semester 2021.

For more information on the BSMET program, contact the Dean of the School of Sciences Dr. Charles Johnson by phone at 912.260.4337 or email at Charles.Johnson@sgsc.edu.
