November 26, 1953 – May 10, 2021

Chris Corbitt, son of Wilbur and Mable Fleming Corbitt, was raised in Willacoochee, Georgia, with his older siblings, Larry and Marsha. He graduated from Atkinson County High in 1972 and attended South Georgia College.

With a talent for meeting people and selling, Chris worked at the family’s hardware store in Willacoochee and later with a hardware wholesaler.

Chris loved Willacoochee. He served on the city council and had a key role in the Old Fashion Days festivals in the early ‘80s.

Chris loved music, and he loved to have fun. He will be remembered for his wit and his loyalty to his many friends. Chris was entertaining and could always make people laugh. For several years, his colorful character was expressed in his mode of transportation around town – a multi-colored hearse.

His extended family also enjoyed Chris and his sense of humor. Several times, Chris provided monologues at family reunions that kept his aunts, uncles, and cousins in stitches. He loved his nieces, putting on magic shows and dressing up as Santa Claus as a surprise. He was especially adept at choosing the toys he gave them, probably because he kept his child-like playfulness.

When tough times came in Chris’s life, he always strove to do better, and he always came back to his faith in God. He worked with Teen Challenge and other groups over the years.

In 2008, Chris had a stroke that began a period of declining health. He entered Presbyterian Village Health Services in 2017, where his mother was a resident in assisted living. Chris’s time there with her was meaningful for both of them. As usual, Chris made friends wherever he went, and many of the residents and staff at the Village loved Chris and will miss him. During his time there, he also enjoyed connecting with many old friends on Facebook.

This winter, Chris spent three months in the hospital with COVID-related pneumonia and died May 10 in hospice at Presbyterian Village. Marsha and Larry were with him when he died.

Chris is survived by his older brother, Larry Corbitt (Beth), and his sister, Marsha Corbitt (David Wehr), and their families. Also surviving are his aunts, Majean Browning and Mary Kay Corbitt; uncles, Jim and Charlie Corbitt; and several cousins.

A graveside service will be held at the Willacoochee Cemetery on Saturday, May 29, at 2 p.m. Casual dress.
