During the week of June 21-27, Georgia 4-H held its annual officer election virtually. Candidates for the state board had to present a one minute speech/skit on Monday evening through a virtual format. On Tuesday and Wednesday, they had to be online for a question/answer session. Voting delegates cast their ballots on Thursday for five statewide officers out of the nine that would become board members. These five officers were announced on Thursday evening. The president and vice-president would be named out of these five at a later time.
On Friday, the voting delegates again went back to the virtual polls to cast their ballot for their district’s representative for the state board. Each of the four districts would get one representative to serve with the five previously announced board members. The announcement of the four remaining representatives was done at the closing assembly of “The Senior Event” on Sunday, June 27.
Coffee County 4-H’s Ashton Ates was elected to serve as the Southeast District Representative on the state board. He will be installed at State 4-H Congress in Atlanta during the week of July 20-23. We want to congratulate Ashton and wish him the best of luck as he begins an exciting year as a Georgia 4-H State Board Member.
THE SENIOR EVENT
Ashton Ates, Jeremiah Brantley, Glenn O’Steen, Austin Strickland, and Justin Strickland, along with 4-H Program Assistant Chalanda Woods, traveled to the Rock Eagle 4-H Center near Eatonton, Georgia, on Saturday, June 26, and Sunday, June 27, to participate in the Georgia 4-H conference called “The Senior Event.” During the weekend, they participated in the annual 4-H “Iron Clover” competition in which events are held to see which district will be victorious and hold the title of “Iron Clover Champion” for the next year. Although the Northwest 4-H District won the Iron Clover competition, everyone had fun competing.
4-H PANTRY PRIDE CONTEST
Coffee County 4-H members interested in a recipe contest are encouraged to enter the Georgia 4-H Pantry Pride Recipe Contest sponsored by the Georgia Food Bank Association and Arby’s Foundation. The recipes created will provide families across Georgia with a recipe bank for inexpensive nutritious meals. The basics of the contest are to create a recipe using items that can be found at a food bank. All recipes will be judged and prizes awarded. Senior 4-H recipes are pre-judged and selected entries will be given some money to purchase their supplies so that they may then prepare their recipe at the Georgia National Fair on Sunday, October 10, 2021. For specific details and rules, please contact Chalanda Woods, 4-H Program Assistant, at the Coffee County Extension office at (912) 384-1402.
GEORGIA NATIONAL FAIR MINI-BOOTHS
Each year, the Georgia National Fair provides contests for youth in 4-H, FFA, FCCLA, and TSA. One of the contests that 4-H members can enter is called mini-booth exhibits. These are small triangular shaped exhibit booths where students can put an exhibit about their main project. It is a great way for 4-H members to share information about their main 4-H project to help build their DPA portfolio. The two back walls of the booths are 24 inches tall by 30 inches wide. The bottom of the booth is triangular shaped and with dimensions of 30 inches by 30 inches by 36 inches across the front. These booths are designed to quickly educate the public as they browse through the educational hall. Therefore, information on the booth should be succinct and large enough to read easily.
4-H members interested in signing up for a mini-booth need to come talk to the 4-H staff and get started preparing it now. We will have a county contest to determine which four will advance to the fair (the fair allows only four per county). The county entry deadline is 4 PM on Friday, August 20.
