Dr. Morris Leis, Superintendent of Coffee County Schools in Douglas, Georgia, was recently elected to serve on the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) Governing Board.  Dr. Leis will be one of three superintendents representing Georgia in Washington DC at the Annual AASA Governing Board meeting in July with AASA covering traveling costs for all participating superintendents.

AASA, the School Superintendents Association, founded in 1865, is the professional organization for more than 13,000 educational leaders in the United States and throughout the world. AASA members are the chief education advocates for children. AASA members advance the goals of public education and champion children’s causes in their districts and nationwide. As school system leaders, AASA members set the pace for academic achievement and help shape policy, oversee its implementation and represent school districts to the public at large.

Ballots were distributed to the 180 school superintendents in Georgia and according to Dr. John Zauner, Executive Director for the Georgia School Superintendent Association, “Dr. Morris Leis, superintendent of Coffee County edged out the top spot.”  According to Dr. Zauner, “Dr. Leis will serve a one-year term July ’21-June ’22 as one of three GSSA/AASA Governing Board seats and then will have an opportunity for continued service if the seat is earned for a new three year term.”

Dr. Zauner added, “I want to thank all of the superintendents who offered to serve in that role. I truly appreciate the high interest.”

“I am honored and humbled to have this opportunity to serve on behalf of all of our public schools,” stated Dr. Leis. “I appreciate the continued support for our schools from our local board of education and all of our faculty, staff and parents.”
