Martha Sue Morris, of Pearson, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2021. She was surrounded by her family in the home where she had lived for the last 64 years. She was 92.
Sue was born in November of 1928, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Peterson. Her family, which included the Sumerlins and Kirklands, is one of the oldest in Atkinson County.
In the fall of 1946, while chaperoning a high school trip, she met the love of her life, Ellie Morris. He had just returned home from his Army service in WWII and they married the next year. Together, they raised two children, Deborah and Terry, but over the next 74 years they touched the lives of nearly every person in Pearson.
They owned several businesses, including a hardware store on Main Street and Ellie would go on to serve several terms as Mayor of the city from the 1990’s until 2013. Whether at home, the store or City Hall, Sue was a true partner.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Sue Morris could do almost anything: from making a dress or baking a birthday cake, to servicing a well pump or working at the drug store. She could fry chicken as good as she could put a roof on the chicken house.
If it needed to be done, she would do it. Sometimes, even if it didn’t need to be done, she would do it anyway.
If you were lucky enough to be her friend, you had someone you could count on. If you loved a bluegrass music festival, you had someone to go with and if you were family, you had someone who loved you unconditionally.
Sue is survived by her youngest sister, Betty Chaplin of Neeses, SC and her sister-in-law Jean Peterson, who still lives in the house that Sue was born and raised in. She is also survived by her husband, Ellie Morris, her two children, four grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
