As we are coming into the fall months, seasonal illness will become more apparent. The seasonal flu (influenza) typically occurs in the fall and winter. However, most flu activity peaks between December and February. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends receiving a flu vaccine yearly as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses.

Due to the strain COVID-19 has placed on our healthcare system, the need for receiving a flu vaccination is even more important this year. With COVID-19 infections continuing to be widespread in communities across Georgia, preventive measures are extremely important in maintaining a healthy immune system that is prepared to fight off any respiratory illnesses that may be occurring. While receiving the flu vaccine will not prevent possible infection by COVID-19, it can assist in reducing the possible infection of both viruses simultaneously.

Everyone six months and older should get a flu vaccine yearly. Individuals at high risk of serious flu complications include young children, pregnant women, people with certain chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease and those aged 50 and older. The flu vaccine is available at all health departments in the Southeast Health District.

For those who may also be interested in receiving their COVID vaccination, these vaccines can both be administered during the same visit. Those interested may receive their vaccination(s) by walking into one of our locations or by making an appointment. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 1-855-473-4374.
