Mr. Dougal Gillis Sr, age 86, of Pearson, Ga, went to his eternal home Sunday morning, October 17, 2021, surrounded by family. Mr. Gillis was born November 10, 1934, to the late Lonnie and Mary Vickers Gillis. Dougal is preceded in death by 6 siblings and several nieces and nephews.

 

Mr. Gillis was in the US Army from 1954-1956. He worked for Union Camp and later spent his career with and retired from the Georgia Department of Revenue. Dougal was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Axson, Ga, where he was known by many as “The Candy Man.” 

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Jean Brantley Gillis, 2 sons, Dougal Jr (Judy) of Willacoochee, and Charlton (Stacy) of Pearson, 2 daughters, Donna Dismuke (Keith) of Douglas, and Melinda Moyer (Bryan) of Fernandina Beach, 9 Grandchildren, 15 Great Grandchildren, and 1 Great Great Grandchild. Dougal is also survived by 1 brother, Neal (Laurelle) of Pearson, brother-in-law, Jimmy Brantley (Marcia) of Waresboro, Ga, and several nieces and nephews.

 

Graveside services were held Wednesday morning, October 20, 2021, at 11:00 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Axson, Ga., with Rev. William Pope, Rev. Edward Mathews and Rev. Jack Chaney officiating.  Special musical selections included, “Go Rest High on that Mountain”, “When We All Get to Heaven” and “Last Dance”, all rendered by cd.  The interment followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery with Military Honors rendered at the gravesite.

 

Serving as Active Pallbearers: Jake Davis, Charlie Gillis, Hampton Giddens, Lon Gillis, Lidge Gillis, and Scott Gillis.

 

Serving as Honorary Pallbearers: Lonnie Gaston Gillis, Shea Browning, Leon Spivey, Jerry Burch, Johnny Burch, Bobby McKinnon, Johnny Gillis, Jimmy Rouse, George Relihan, Keith Wall, and the Senior Adult Sunday School Class at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Rest in peace, Dougal. Your legacy, your wit and humor will never be forgotten.
