The history of orthopedics in Georgia dates back to 1897, when Mike Hoke, M.D., arrived in Atlanta as the first orthopedic surgeon in the state. As orthopedics expanded throughout Georgia, Dr. Charles “Ed” Irwin founded the Georgia Orthopaedic Society in 1946. The first meeting was held at Warm Springs, Georgia, with 12 founding orthopedic surgeons present. Over the next 75 years, this Society grew in strength and numbers, advancing orthopedics across both the state and the nation.

Today, the field of Orthopedics continues to grow and evolve with the guidance and contributions of Georgia’s strong medical leaders. One of those leaders is South Georgia’s Hewatt “Mac” Sims, M.D., FAAOS. Dr. Sims is a fellowship-trained, board-certified Orthopedic Spine Surgeon with Orthopedic Surgeons of Georgia. He is known throughout Georgia and the Southeastern United States for being highly skilled in minimally invasive surgical techniques of the neck, back, and spine. Dr. Sims is respected by his peers as an expert in spine surgery.

Recently, the 75th Annual Georgia Orthopaedic Society meeting was held at The Cloister on Sea Island, Georgia. Dr. Mac Sims was chosen as a presenter at this meeting on the topic of  “The Management of Cervical Stenosis.” Dr. Sims noted, “It was an honor and privilege to present to my peers at this years’ society meeting. The desire for personal and professional development is evident in this group of orthopedic professionals, and it was such a pleasure to have the opportunity to contribute to this year’s education session.”

Orthopedics in Georgia has a rich history, and much of that history includes initiatives and advancements by members of the prestigious Georgia Orthopaedic Society (GOS). The Society has strenuous qualifications for membership, including licensure in the State of Georgia and maintaining the highest professional, moral, and ethical standards. Society members are encouraged to participate in all aspects of the Society’s work to help foster a lifelong commitment to advocacy, education, and camaraderie.
