Second half scoring run lifts SGSC over Gordon State

A second half scoring run by South Georgia State College broke open a close game against the Gordon State Highlanders and lifted the Hawks (12-4, 1-1) to a 70-51 win Saturday afternoon.

         

Trailing 31-30 at halftime, SGSC took the second half lead (33-31) within the first three minutes and led 36-34 with 16:18 remaining in the game. The Hawks went on a 14-2 run over the next 3:39 to extend their lead to 50-36. SGSC used the next six minutes to stretch the lead even further, holding the Highlanders to only seven points while building a 62-43 lead.  

         

Gordon State was held to 35 percent shooting in the second half after shooting 47 percent in the first 20 minutes. Both teams struggled from the three-point line, making a combined total of four three-pointers the entire game.

         

Jayce Moore led the Hawks with a complete game of 16 points, 19 rebounds, five assists, and six steals. Carlos Hart had 15 points and five rebounds, while AJ Spencer finished with 12 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Malik Crawford rounded out the top scorers with 10 points.

         

The Hawks will travel to Albany Tech Tuesday night and will return to Waycross Thursday, Jan. 13 to face Central Georgia Tech. Tip for the Central Georgia Tech game is set for 7 p.m.

         

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
