Retired teacher, former school board member L.J. Harrell passes at 83

L.J. Harrell, retired educator and former member of the Coffee County Board of Education, has died. He was 83.

 

 

Mr. Harrell passed away early Tuesday morning, March 22, 2022, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Mr. Harrell was born September 8, 1938 to the late Jesse Harrell and the late Miriam Kirkland Harrell.

 

 

Mr. Harrell retired from the Coffee County School System in December of 1998 having served as a teacher, Principal of Satilla Elementary, Student Services Coordinator and Assistant Superintendent.  Following his retirement, he also served as a school board member and Chairman of the Board. Mr. Harrell’s wife, Jewel, also retired from the school system, having served as a teacher and administrator. Their daughter-in-law, Angie, is a secretary at Satilla Elementary. Mr. Harrell attended Tanner Baptist Church in the Satilla Community.

 

 

Survivors include: His wife, Jewel Revis Harrell of Douglas; children, Dr. Justin Harrell of Douglas, Larry Harrell of Douglas, and Terry Harrell and wife Angie of Douglas; brother, Frankie Harrell of Douglas; grandchildren, Nicole Taft and husband Ryan, Flynn Harrell, Miriam Harrell,a nd Ava Harrell, all of
Douglas; great-grandchildren, Hunter Taft, Declan Taft, Halle Harrell, and Landon Taft, all of Douglas; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends also survive.

 

 

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Turner; a brother, Phillip Harrell; and a grandson, Jeremy Harrell.The funeral service will be held Thursday afternoon, March 24, 2022 at 3:00 PM at Chapel of Ricketson Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Stone officiating. The interment will follow in Harrell Grove Cemetery.The family will receive friends on Thursday afternoon, March 24, 2022 from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM at Chapel of Ricketson Funeral Home.Active pallbearers for the service will be Bryan McKinnon, Jesse Harrell, Ryan Taft, Chance Harrell, Stanley O’Steen and Johnny Jowers.

 

 

Ricketson Funeral Home is in chargeof the arrangements.
