Douglas will join other cities across Georgia celebrating the Georgia Municipal Association’s Georgia Cities Week during the week of April 24-30, 2022. The city will hold a variety of events throughout the week focusing on the 2022 theme, “Georgia Cities Connecting for Success”.

“We’re very proud of our city and the services we provide that make it attractive to residents and visitors,” said Mayor Tony Paulk. “Cities provide the services and infrastructure to help businesses grow and set the stage for events where families and individuals can gather as a community.”

To kickoff events for Georgia Cities Week, the Public Works Department will offer Tire Amnesty Week that will be held on Monday, April 25 – Friday, April 29, 8:30am-4:30pm and Saturday, April 30, 8:30am-12Noon. Tire Amnesty Week, will allow citizens of Douglas to dispose of up to 4 tires per resident at the City Pole Yard located at 670 S. Pearl Avenue, adjacent to the Post Office. Proof of residency is required. No commercial and no farm tires will be accepted. Rubber only – no rims. Citizens must be in line 15 minutes prior to ending time.

Spring Junk Free Week will be Monday, April 25 through Friday, April 29, 2022, between the hours of 8:30am – 4:30pm, and on Saturday, April 30, 2022 from 8:30am-12Noon, at the City Pole Yard located at 670 South Pearl Avenue, adjacent to the Post Office. For citizens inside the city limits of Douglas, fees will be waived, during this one week, on big household and junk items. This will not apply to tires or hazardous chemicals. Items can be dropped off at the City of Douglas Pole Yard (off Pearl Avenue, adjacent to the post office). Citizens must provide a copy of their utility bill as residency proof and must be in line 15 minutes prior to ending time.

Here’s your chance to prove you know Douglas better than anyone! The city is partnering with the Douglas Visitor Information Center, to hold a social media contest on the City’s Facebook page. Each day during the week, Doug (the official Gopher Tortoise Festival Mascot), will visit landmarks in Douglas and take a photo. The first person to answer the correct landmark in the comments on Facebook will win a prize! Prizes may be picked up at the Douglas Visitor Information Center at the Atrium (114 N. Peterson Avenue, Suite 205).

On Wednesday, April 27, Coffee Alliance for Arts will host Munch and Music at Emma Ward Park at 12noon and will showcase the Coffee High School Show Choir. Everyone is invited to bring their lunch and hear some great music. Drinks and cookies will be available for purchase.

The Douglas Police Department is partnering with the Magnolia House and other local agencies to offer the National Crime Victims Awareness Week Luncheon on Friday, April 29, 2022. This year during National Crime Victim Awareness week, the DPD is focusing on bringing awareness to the unsolved murder of Sandra Latrail Robinson which occurred in 2010. If anyone has information regarding this unsolved murder, please reach out to the GBI or the Douglas Police Department through the DPD See Something, Say Something Anonymous Tip Line 912-260-3600, GBI Anonymous Tip Line 1-800-597-8477 or submit tips online to the GBI,

Keep Douglas Beautiful will host its first clean up, the Great American Cleanup, on Saturday, April 30, 2022, 9AM – 11AM. Great American Cleanup participants should arrive at Ashley Slater House (211 S. Gaskin Avenue) between 8:45AM and 9:00AM for registration. Groups will journey to areas in Ward 3 as identified by the Litter Index. Cleanup will take place at 9AM and last until 11AM. At the end of the cleanup, volunteers will receive complimentary Chick-Fil-A sandwich vouchers. Volunteers are needed and this is a great opportunity for clubs, organizations, churches, businesses, and individuals to roll up their sleeves and earn community service hours by making Douglas beautiful.

Cities across Georgia will be celebrating Georgia Cities Week, sponsored by the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA), to showcase and celebrate cities and the many services they provide. Based in Atlanta, GMA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that provides legislative advocacy, educational, employee benefit and consulting services to its 537 member cities.
