Recently, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) held a Comprehensive Plan training session with the Douglas-Coffee County Planning Commission at the Ashley-Slater House. The training session was conducted by Ebony Simpson, the Planning Outreach and Training Coordinator with DCA, during the regular meeting of the Planning Commission. Planning Commission members attending the training were Roger Thompson (Planning Commission Chairman), Tim Thomason, Steve Bailey, and Marvin Knight, along with City of Douglas staff members, Georgia Henderson (Community Development Director), and Ebonee Dobson (City Planner).

A comprehensive plan sets forth the vision and goals for a city’s future and provides the overall foundation for all land-use regulations in the city.  Members of planning committees need to know the importance of a Comprehensive Plan. Currently, the cities of Ambrose, Broxton, Douglas, Nicholls, and Coffee County governments are operating from the master plan that originated in 2007 and is active through 2027.  Occasional updates or amendments may be added to a Joint Comprehensive Plan such as the recent addition of a Broadband Element. Public input is vital to any plan and public hearings are held before the adoption or amendment of the Comprehensive Plan.

The Douglas-Coffee County Planning Commission meets on an as-needed basis, which is generally the third Thursday of each month at 6:00 pm at the Ashley-Slater House (211 S. Gaskin Avenue).  For more information on the Douglas-Coffee County Planning Commission, contact City Planner, Ebonee Dobson at 912-383-0277.
