The South Georgia State College Hawks earned a split this past weekend during the annual Applebee’s Okefenokee College Classic on SGSC’s Waycross Campus. The Hawks (5-3) defeated New Rock Prep 89-50 Friday night and lost to No. 18 Tallahassee Community College (TCC) 76-67 Saturday afternoon.

Zae Wiggins, Keith Lamar, and Yannis Woods were the leading scorers against New Rock Prep. Wiggins finished with 19 points, six rebounds, six assists, and six steals. Lamar had 12 points and seven rebounds, while Woods earned a double-double of 10 points, 13 rebounds, and seven blocked shots.

The Hawks held New Rock Prep to 23.7 percent shooting in the first half and 26.8 percent for the game. SGSC forced a total of 28 turnovers and outrebounded New Rock Prep 51-41.

Carlos Hart, Wiggins, and Justin Edmondson led the Hawks in scoring against TCC. Hart had 22 points, six rebounds, and five steals while Wiggins had 17 points, seven assists, and three steals. Edmondson finished with 15 points and five rebounds.

SGSC shot 81.5 percent from the free throw line, missing only five shots (22-of-27). TCC took advantage of strong shooting from the field (45.8 percent) and three-point line (31.8 percent), which proved to be the difference in the game.

The Applebee’s Okefenokee College Classic fielded four teams – SGSC, East Georgia State, TCC, and New Rock Prep. Two players from each team were selected to the All-Classic Team: Wiggins and Hart (SGSC), Jordan Fordyce and Cartavious Terry (East Georgia State), Jaquavian Florence and Addison Patterson (TCC), and Chris Berry and Matthew Willis (New Rock Prep).

The Hawks will enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday then return to action Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. against Reinhardt University (JV) on SGSC’s Douglas Campus. SGSC returns to Waycross Saturday, Dec. 3 at 4 p.m. against Florida Gateway College.

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
