Officers from the the Douglas Police Department recently arrested a 30-year-old woman from Homerville on possession charges during a traffic stop.

According to the incident report, on January 1, 2023, around 11:12 a.m., an officer was on patrol when his tag reader alerted him that a vehicle next to him had a suspended registration.

The car’s tag number was run through the system and was also reportedly suspended. The officer stopped the vehicle in the Oak Park community. As the officer got out of the patrol vehicle, the back passenger in the vehicle that had been pulled over opened the door and got out of the car.

The officer told the passenger, identified as 30-year-old Ashley Snelling, to get back in the vehicle. Snelling complied. The report states that the officer explained to the driver why he was stopped and asked for his driver’s license. The driver then handed the officer an ID card, stating that he did not have a valid license at the time. According to the officer, he then called for backup due to the fact that Snelling “would not move around in the backseat and would not show him her hands.”

When backup arrived, the driver was taken out of the vehicle and placed in handcuffs. The driver and an additional passenger were searched, along with the vehicle, but officers found no contraband. At some point during the stop, Snelling began to have a seizure and fell to the ground. EMS was called to give a medical check on Snelling and transported her to Coffee Regional Medical Center.

Upon EMS arrival, the officer reportedly smelled a strong odor of marijuana on Snelling “every time she moved.” Officers searched Snelling and found a bag of a green leafy substance and a plastic bag with a white substance.

Snelling was released following a medical check at the hospital and transported to the Coffee County Jail. She was charged with possession of a controlled substance (suspected molly) and possession of marijuana.

As of Monday morning, Snelling was still incarcerated in the Coffee County Jail.
