Every year, members of the MLK Jr. Celebration Committee of Coffee County come together to host a special day-long event to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s accomplishments and constant fight for civil rights. The celebration will kick off tonight at the Hightower Memorial Temple, with this year’s theme announced as “His Dreams Still Matter.”

The service will begin at 6:00 p.m. with Bishop Michael White of Litman Cathedral in Albany as the keynote speaker.

On Monday morning, the MLK fellowship breakfast will take place at Gaines Chapel AME beginning at 8:00 a.m. until 9:15 a.m. Breakfast will be free for those who attend.

Following the breakfast, youth activities will be held at Pleasant Grove and at the Willie Mae Roundtree Center, starting at 10:00 a.m. There will be presentations by Tanisha Morris, who is a motivational mentor, mental health facilitator, and empowerment coach. The committee encourages all families to bring their children, which will last until 11:30 a.m.

At noon, the annual “Happy Birthday, Dr. King” program (ages 5 through 11) will take place at the Willie Mae Rountree Center. Organizers stated that parents may bring their younger children and assist the members of the committee. Outdoor activities, including games and giveaways, are planned for the children. Refreshments will also be provided.

For more information about any of the MLK Jr. events, contact Irene Murray at (912) 384-3116, City Commissioner Kentaiwon Durham at (912) 292-7225, or visit the committee’s Facebook page, MLK JR Celebration Committee.
