Vernica Crockett, a native of Nicholls and E-911 director for Coffee County, was sworn in by Governor Brian Kemp on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 along with 4 others for the Georgia Emergency Communications Authority Board. This ceremony took place at the governor’s office in Atlanta. The mission for the Georgia Emergency Communications Authority is to facilitate efficient operation of 911 and emergency communications state wide.

Vernica became a Coffee County 911 operator on May 9, 1997 and upheld that position until 2004 when she was appointed 911 director. When asked what led her to become a 911 operator, she states, “My curiosity kind of led me there.” Leading up to May 9, 1997, Vernica had been employed at Coffee Regional Medical Center; however she needed something different at the time. She states that becoming a 911 operator wasn’t a very easy job to get, but clearly she has made a huge impact on the 911 operating system in Coffee County over the years.

“I was very excited for a new opportunity,” says Vernica when asked how it made her feel to be appointed as one of five members on the Georgia Emergency Communications Authority Board. In doing so, she will be representing all 911 directors and 911 staff for the state of Georgia.

For 26 years, Vernica Crockett has worked for or directed the 911 operating system of Coffee County. Her hard work and determination has now awarded her the appointment of a very prestigious position for the state. When asked what she has enjoyed about being a 911 operator and now 911 director, she states, “I enjoy helping people. I really enjoy providing services for our community.”
