Sometimes the lights are on but nobody’s supposed to be home.
That was the case on May 29 around 3:30 a.m. when a Douglas police officer found Jerry Campbell, 44, inside the city’s old water department building on South Pearl Avenue. Campbell appeared to be living inside the building, according to the incident report.
The report states that while on patrol early that morning, an officer saw a light on inside the building. According to the report, the officer had cleared that building previously. The officer went to the door closest to where the light was coming from. The door was locked and the officer asked if anyone was inside. Someone answered the officer.
The report states that a man, identified as Campbell, came out of the room. The officer had previously arrested Campbell at the same location for trespassing. While checking out the room, the officer noticed a pallet on the floor; it appeared that Campbell had been sleeping there. The officer found suspected marijuana near the pallet. He also found two book bags in the room. Campbell stated that those bags were his. Inside the bags were a vial containing a fentanyl citrate injection and another vial containing lidocaine and epinephrine, the report states.
Campbell said that the two vials were not his. The officer also found a bag of suspected methamphetamine in the room; again, Campbell said the methamphetamine was not his.
Campbell was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance, possession and use of drug related objects (two counts), and criminal trespass. He was transported to the Coffee County Jail where he remains.
