On Tuesday, July 25, 2023, the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Tanner Insurance Agency and new owner Bruce Purvis. Purvis was born and raised in Coffee County, and after residing in Alabama for quite some time, he is back home and ready to serve our community. Tanner Insurance Agency has two locations – one in Douglas, and one in Pearson. Their Douglas office is located at 319 S. Madison Avenue Suite C, and their Pearson office is located at 407 N. Main Street.
Tanner Insurance Agency was opened in 1984 by Clark and Linda and Tanner to create a local agency that could be authentic, down to earth, and have a wide range of insurance options to be able to take the utmost care of their customers. Until March of this year, Tanner Insurance Agency was owned and operated by Kevin McGovern. McGovern purchased the business from Mr. and Mrs. Tanner in 1998. When asked about the history of the business, Purvis stated that “Tanner Insurance Agency is a C Corporation that was founded in 1984. Unbeknownst to me, the original owner told the recent seller that the terms of his acquiring the business would be to keep the locations in the current areas, and take good care of the customers; prior to my purchasing of the business, Kevin asked the same of me. As the new owner we are striving to keep that wonderful tradition of excellence in customer care and presence in the communities we serve!
“Born and raised in coffee county until the age of ten, it is great to be back to a place I have a big heart for! Not only are we able to cater to our customers specific needs, we also sow into our communities schools, and events that benefit those who are in need. We are excited to carry on this tradition for many years to come,” said Purvis.
A loyal friend of Purvis’s from his days in Alabama graciously made the six-hour trip to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony, and provide the attendees and surrounding businesses with barbecue from his business, Spencer’s Smoke Shack. Spencer’s Smoke Shack is located in Uriah, Alabama.
With a large crowd in attendance from both near and far, Bruce Purvis and his family proudly cut the ribbon in honor of their new endeavors here in the Coffee and Atkinson County communities.
